TV Pilot Initiative

Project Name: TV Pilot Initiative

Funding Recipient: Channel 44

Activity: The TV Pilot Initiative is a First Nations-led program delivered by Channel 44 in partnership with the SAFC that will support emerging South Australian First Nations participant filmmakers to develop and grow their skills. Some of Australia’s most experienced First Nations TV practitioners will provide mentoring and masterclasses on developing collaborative and long format projects as a ‘hired gun’. The initiative will be delivered to 20-30 filmmakers, with the aim  of creating sustainable careers.

Outcome: The overall experience was overwhelmingly positive. Having industry professionals such as Pauline Clague, Adrian Wills, Lisa Scott and Leah Purcell was an invaluable experience for the participants to gain industry insight, knowledge and connection.

“The First Nations TV Pilot workshop weekend was invaluable. I enjoyed the supportive group and producer feedback, which helped refine my ideas. It left me inspired and motivated.” – Sierra Schrader, Participant

Emerging First Nations writers gained new skills and hands on experience through the mock story room, helping them understand the processes involved in developing a TV series, including creating series arcs, character breakdowns, and writing a series bible. The project provided participants with the rare opportunity to collaborate with and learn from established Indigenous professionals in the industry, offering insights into both the creative and collaborative aspects of television writing.
