Activity: See Them: Be Them is a series of three workshops for 14-18 year olds designed to demystify the world of post production for marginalised young people in Aotearoa. Predominantly Pasifika, Māori and Asian mentors will visit schools to share their craft, workshop tips and tricks and answer questions. The sessions will also be available to remote learners across the country virtually. The workshops will aim not only to demonstrate the steps involved in the technical aspects of post production but also broaden young people’s understanding of the creativity found in these vital roles.
Outcome: Three workshops were delivered in the Bay of Plenty, Wairarapa and Auckland, with a total of 210 participants. They enjoyed high engagement levels among students, with many expressing increased interest in post-production careers. “Honestly the impact was greater than I imagined. Our attendees were excited and asked a lot of questions, not only about the post process but the film industry in general. A handful of students showcased exceptional talent, which has led to ongoing discussions via email with themselves and teachers… our resources are available online through www.stbt.nz and teachers that we worked with can use them in the years to come with new young people. In the future, we will continue to adapt our workshops and hopefully reach more rangatahi (young people).” – Maria Silberstein, POW Studios
